Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate

The candidate will perform intermediate level life support, stabilization procedures, and emergency medical care in the Emergency Medical Services unit of Shelby Rescue Squad Inc.

Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for providing intermediate level life support and medical emergency treatments to patients at the accident or illness scenes and during transport to medical facilities. Work includes assuring that quality emergency patient care standards are in place, proper equipment and treatment are available; and sound judgment and treatment decisions are made. Work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, extremes in temperatures, and noise, vibrations, hazards associated with emergency medical work including exposures to fumes, odors, dust mites, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Because of the nature of the work, the employee is exposed to human blood and is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. Work is supervised on site by the administration of Shelby Rescue Squad Inc. and is evaluated through conferences, observation, discussion of procedures at emergency scenes, and public feedback.

Duties and Responsibilities
May perform any act consistent with the EMT-I level as defined by patient care protocols, operator of emergency medical unit responding to calls, administers intermediate level of life support techniques based on patient assessment. Techniques include drawing blood, administering approved medications, initiating intravenous fluids, and performing advanced airway techniques and the intermediate level. Assists with daily cleaning duties of base and vehicle, completes necessary records and reports for calls including information for billing documentation and legal accountability. The EMT-I must also report any facility maintenance, radio, vehicle, and equipment maintenance to the proper level of authority.

Recruitment and Selection Guidelines
Ability to perform duties in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, medical protocols and standing orders. Ability to work with diverse population based on unique situations encountered. Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergencies and stressful situations as well as drive in a safe manor in adverse conditions in accordance with state laws, communicate effectively in a tactful manor with the public as well as co-workers, hospital staff, law enforcement, and the general public, must be able to maintain patient confidentiality.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Must possess visual acuity to operate mobile equipment, monitor work site progress, and use measurement devices.

Desirable Education and Experience
The candidate must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and 6 months experience as an EMT-I; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Special Requirements
Current North Carolina State Certification as an EMT-I, completion of additional course work and/or certification to include trauma or other areas, as determined by Administration, possession of a valid driver’s license. All part time employees are required to work a minimum of 24 hours per month.
